International Museum Day

Guided Tours

The museums of the Akademie are taking part in the day of action. The original preserved flats of Bertolt Brecht, Helene Weigel and Anna Seghers can be visited with free guided tours.

Bertolt Brecht lived in his apartment at Chausseestraße from 1953 until his death in 1956. His decision to move into this apartment was especially motivated by its proximity to the Berliner Ensemble, the Akademie der Künste and the historic cemeteries. The apartment also houses Brecht’s private library with approximately 4,000 volumes.

During Brecht’s lifetime, Helene Weigel lived in an apartment on the second floor of the side wing. After Brecht’s death, she left these rooms to the Bertolt Brecht Archive and moved into an apartment on the ground floor where she had a veranda added leading into the garden. There she lived until her death in 1971.

After many years in exile, Anna Seghers found a new home in Berlin Adlershof. Her flat, where she lived from 1955 until 1983, contains many personal mementoes as well as her extensive library of around 10,000 volumes, including books by writer friends from many countries.
