Konrad Wolf on his 100th birthday – Recollections Awarding of the Konrad Wolf Prize 2025

Award Ceremony

When Konrad Wolf was elected President of the East German Akademie der Künste in 1965, he was 39 years old and already an internationally acclaimed film director. Over the next 17 years, he worked to navigate the cultural and political tensions within an unruly art scene. These conflicts reverberate through his films, which explore the role of art in everyday life and politics.

The event marking his 100th birthday pays tribute to the artist and his formative years as Academy President. After that, the Film and Media Arts and Performing Arts sections will each introduce their winners of the 2025 Konrad Wolf Prize.

The honours go to Gabriel Hageni and Debora Fiora of the cinema Krokodil, which has been working tirelessly for years to raise the visibility of Central and Eastern European films, and theatre historian Klaus Völker, who, as a dramaturge, author and former rector of the Ernst Busch University of Theatre Arts, is unrivalled in his knowledge and understanding of theatre history.
