Lichtbrechen. The photographer and choreographer VA Wölfl
Few other artists stand like VA Wölfl for the productive connections between the visual arts, photography and German dance theatre, as developed at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen in the 1960s and 1970s; Kurt Jooss and Otto Steinert being the outstanding initiators; Pina Bausch, Reinhild Hoffmann, Ute Eskildsen, Timm Rautert, Rolf Borzik and others next to VA Wölfl the inventors of new artistic languages. His work of experimental photography, performance, film and video art culminates in the choreographies of the NEUER TANZ ensemble (1987–2024), one of the most resistant stage works of contemporary art.
Founded together with Wanda Golonka, Wölfl led the company alone since 1995. Key works from NEUER TANZ, film, performance as film, performance and photographic works are shown in video installations. Companions from art and science contextualise one of the most successful theatre projects of the last 35 years.
