In the Wave Field / The Ear to the Future Audio plays in 3D

Radio Play

A closed band of 140 loudspeakers at ear level, 15 ceiling speakers, 20 floor speakers and 4 subwoofers – in the showroom of the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute, sounds can be distributed in any dimension of the room using the wave field synthesis system. In this TiME Lab, Tomorrow's immersive Media Experience Lab, immersive listening experiences can be created. The sound experience can be visually supported by film projections onto the floor-to-ceiling, sound-permeable 180-degree screen that spans two sides of the showroom.

To mark the 100th anniversary of radio plays in Germany on 24 October, 2024, four pieces from the Berlin Radio Play Festival will be remixed for this three-dimensional listening experience:

Jasmina Al-Qaisi: A Stork Story, 50:29 min, in excerpts (1st place “The long burning microphone” at the BHF 2022)

Antonia Beeskow: NOISE: Are you listening carefully?, 5 min (3rd place “The glowing button microphone” at the BHF 2021)

Tilman Böhnke and Alexander Scharf: Wrath of the Goddess, 1 min (1st place “The Micro Racer”, 1st place “The igniting microphone” at the BHF 2022)

Hye Young Sin: patterns for benches, 7:09 min (2nd place “The igniting microphone”, nominated for “The short burning microphone” at the BHF 2022)

For this purpose, the screen will be shown visuals by Josef Maria Schäfers.

The showroom can accommodate a maximum of 15 people per screening. Between the two screenings, there will be a panel discussion with the radio play producers and representatives of the HHI, in which the sound technical conditions and possibilities as well as experiences and perspectives of wave synthesis will be presented. The number of participants for the discussion is not limited.
