24th Academy Discussion: Film Criticism and Cinema Art
Since 2018, Akademie President and filmmaker Jeanine Meerapfel has invited filmmakers and industry representatives to debate cinematic policy issues in the run-up to the Berlinale. Previous topics of these Akademie talks have included the love of cinema, cultural film funding, international applications, streaming and the future of festivals. The dialogue topic of this year’s discussion before the 74th Berlinale is film criticism and cinema art.
Film art, cinema, film criticism, film studies and their communication are inextricably interwoven. They influence the experience and perception of film in a particular way. How can we steer this course? To what extent are film criticism and the scholarly examination of narrative forms in film connected? And how can criticism, academic classification, and film education contribute to saving the cinema as a shared, communal space for experiencing films?
