Peter Weiss Night
“For me, the means of expression were never bound to a single category. From the beginning, I was not just a poet or a painter but everything all at once …”, Peter Weiss (1916–82) wrote in his notebooks. Not only are words, images and film inseparably combined with one another in his individual works, Weiss also created a major work in each respective genre: as a painter, filmmaker, playwright and author. He achieved international success with his documentary political dramas Marat/Sade, Die Ermittlung (The Investigation) and Viet Nam Diskurs (Discourse on Vietnam). His literary masterpiece Die Ästhetik des Widerstands (The Aesthetics of Resistance) has influenced generations of authors and students in both the West and East, and has redefined questions of aesthetics and politics. On the occasion of what would have been Peter Weiss’ 100th birthday, artists, critics and his lifetime companions commemorate and reassess his work. This long night of readings, conversations, film clips, performances and music will conclude the Akademie der Künste’s general members' meeting. With Volker Braun, Jörg Magenau, Gunilla Palmstierna-Weiss, Ulrich Peltzer, Kathrin Röggla, Ingo Schulze, Florian Wüst, Hanns Zischler, et al.
