Zones and Memes: Right-Wing Spaces Off- and Online
Lectures and discussions about the Right-Wing Spaces research project
4/5 April, Pariser Platz
With Gilad Baram, Theresia Enzensberger, Philipp Krüpe, Paul Mason, Tiara Roxanne, Simon Strick, Niloufar Tajeri and Stephan Trüby
Liberal democracies in many places have been witnessing the rise of authoritarian and (neo )fascist movements and governments for some time. The Right-Wing Spaces research project has been studying their spatial dimension since 2018 – from memes stoking hatred in digital space to revisionist memorial architecture and anti-democratic private city projects. On 4 and 5 April 2023, the Akademie der Künste is hosting a discussion on the economic, political and media implications of the global shift to the right – and the resistance to it. Both evenings are curated by Stephan Trüby and Philipp Krüpe, who together head the Right-Wing Spaces research project, which is based at the Institute for Principles of Modern Architecture at the University of Stuttgart.
On 4 April, author and journalist Theresia Enzensberger, journalist, author and film-maker Paul Mason and architect and architectural theorist Niloufar Tajeri will discuss right-wing spaces with a focus on the economic dimension. The discussion on 5 April looks at the same topic through a media lens. The debate continues with visual artist and film-maker Gilad Baram, scholar and artist Tiara Roxanne and gender researcher and media scholar Simon Strick. Stephan Trüby will act as moderator in each case, Philipp Krüpe will give an introduction and present the digital atlas rechteraeume.net.
